   2016 Rhino Architectural Surfaces Parameterization Teaching     Contents 

 Course Description 
   In recent years, foreign-renowned architectural design company has used Rhino design scheme and achieved remarkable design effects. Currently, Rhino has gradually become a hot spot in the field of architectural design, and depending on Rhino’s powerful surface modeling capacity, the architectural designers have great advantages when designing free-form surface of creative architecture. And in domestic, it also emerged in a number of architects and students who desired for designing the best surface modeling style. Meanwhile, Rhino plug-in Grasshopper gave us expand thinking and creative platform that the real traditional design model cannot give, so mastering Rhino and its plug-in T-Splines and Grasshopper have been on the agenda of major domestic and international architectural design company.           

    The author believes that surface parametric building is not difficult for the designers who mastered Rhino. When there is nobody in the whole construction industry can use surface modeling tools, the foreign Zaha architectural firm and domestic MAD architectural firms take the lead in mastering surface architectural modeling techniques and stands out by adopting formally this differentia competition.         

  By analyzing and onsite teaching some modeling skills and experience of some completed or will be constructed surface architectural works, this course let students systematically master the curves and surfaces of Rhino, as well as the principle of rules for modeling tools, and how to develop and apply to their actual projects, which are the value to choose learning this course. 

 Display of course contents: 

   The following contents are the cases of the course. And the skills and experience of principles, rules have been hidden in the cases, and displayed contents are mostly the modeling techniques and experience which are commonly used or urgently needed. Some of these cases are the actual classic cases which have been built or are under construction, which are used to refine modeling techniques, disseminate scientific ideas and correct modeling ideas.   

 1.Package customization in the construction industry  

(1)A:Homemade model color display plug-in: the initial display effect of Rhino is not ideal. How to customize a set of display mode with high quality in Rhino according to their preferences and can be switched as their wished? From then on, it let Rhino has its individual colors and increased the modeling funs. 

 (1)B:  Homemade fool rendering to observe and deliberate models: we will provide more than 500 kinds of construction materials and three kinds of common lighting setup parameters for the rendering in construction industry to students, so that the students can rapidly preview the rendering effects to achieve rendering foolization. Let everyone can learn simple and practical rendering techniques, which is convenient for the deliberation and design of models. Better guiding effect drawing: company will produce the effect drawing which more conforms to designers. 

2.The principles and techniques of surface modeling tools  
   This section will introduce in details the origin and working principles for the curve and surface modeling tools, and it will use the rich architectural cases such as Summary Nest, surface of Water Cube, China Aviation Pavilion and Danish Museum in the World Expo as example to introduce the common but little-known architectural modeling skills and experience of surface modeling tools. By learning the cases in this section, the students will have a thorough understanding and master of the surface modeling tools.

   How to play the spatial curve and rich and changeable shape? Are there any shortcuts to training three-dimensional spatial thinking? It is quite common for the repeated structure in the construction, so how to make an architectural model with unified form and function. Spatial surrounded modeling technique

  How to develop other similar architectural models according to the mature architectures on the market? How to customize the background of Rhino model to draw color space?

(6) For the same modeling tool, due to the starting point’s connection of curve is different, its form will produce what kind of change? 

(7) Terrain is the topic that the construction industry often encountered, how to make some regular terrain? 

(8) How to make more rigorous terrain and free-form terrain? 

Straightening curved surface, based on the consideration of construction materials, technology and cost, how to transfer surface modeling into a “straight and flat” modeling elements? How to design and distinguish uniform and non-uniform block face? (curve-shaped glass is difficult to manufacture) 

(9) For distorted buildings and sexy buildings, how to ensure that the structure of every layer for the distorted buildings will not have big changes?

(10) How to design the common steel structure in the construction industry, and how to node split the steel structure modeling to match up with and generate processing? 

 Modeling trainings for integrated cases 
Practice makes perfect. In practice, you can experience all kinds of modeling tools, accumulate their own modeling experience. In these integrated cases, you will not only be satisfied by learning a variety of surface modeling techniques, but also better understand their technique difficulties. 

Case 1. MAGICA Retail and Business Center    

The design of jesolo MAGICA Retail and Business Center takes advantages of its site which is near Venice. Several parts composed of continuous construction site, which are separated from each other, but achieved unification in the spatial logic with their ever-changing effects. From center to the surrounding, it “opens” like petals. The important and difficult problems to be solved in modeling are how to make the various spaces perfect seamlessly, and to make the connection of surface and surface to reach G2, so 
that the building looks seamlessly. Non-rendering Rhino modeling diagram is as follow: 

Case 2. French Metz Pompidou Center

 How to achieve perfect flow and to be used in Metz Pompidou Center? The overall structure is designed in accordance with their wishes? 

Case 3. Bird’s Nest in Olympics 

Prior to the Olympics in 2008, parameterization has just sprout in China and there are less talents master parametric technology, so how to use manual modeling method to quickly manufacture the stele structure of the Bird’s Nest. 

Case 4. Dubai Financial Center

 Dubai Financial Center belongs to bionic design, which is just like a beautiful blooming petal. The difficulty for modeling is how to make the façade to be a complete whole (a full NURBS surface), to make the façade of entrance more inclined, and to correspondingly tilt angles of other surfaces according to the inclined parameters of the entrance. And how to make the protruding portion and the top of the architecture reach the perfect G2 continuousness. 

Case 5. Spatial surrounding architecture   

By the training of the foregoing small cases of spatial surrounding, students have ideas immediately when getting this case, but why we need to repeatedly practice this building? Because this case has several important techniques to explain, so that to make the spatial building more fairing and perfect.

Case 6. Chengdu Century Art Center

 Curve is an art. After deeply master the basic principle of Rhino’s curve, it can vividly play and show your curved surface design ideas. This art center has a strong spatial logic, and there is a certain curve logic when open windows. How to find the logic of curve control point, and how to use the rich logical tools to wholly edit them. 

  Case 7. Cairo World Expo Pavilion  

 Another gradual window opening surface structure construction. This design gives us a strong sense of visual impact on the whole, and in addition to take care of the visual aesthetic, it needs to design modeling through analyzing the light, and by virtue of grasshopper to produce fast and adjust parameters at random, but how to use the manual method to edit a set of curves rapidly and coordinate with corresponding tools to complete a similar surface structure of buildings.

  Grasshopper is a plug-in use programmed algorithm to produce modeling operating in Rhino environment, and to directly change model’s forms by adjusting the parameters, which is a software designed with highly parameterization, and the followings are the
